Miss Congeniality (2000)

Originally reviewed on December 26, 2000

I saw this on Christmas Day, and while I normally like a little more meat in my movies at that time of year, Miss Congeniality was a truly entertaining fluff piece. It stars Sandra Bullock doing what she does best: not taking herself too seriously. She has taken over Meg Ryan’s title of America’s Sweetheart and deserves it. Not only is she gorgeous, but she is a gifted comic actress. The movie itself has some moments of downright stupid plot machinations and dialogue (pity poor Michael Caine and Candace Bergen for having stumbled into their poorly drawn caricatures), but Bullock saves the day with her charm and endearing self-effacement.

My rating: **: good, but you can certainly wait for video
